When the pick is short, the access is paved, and the whole job should be done before lunch. A 40-ton truck crane drives to the site on its own carrier, sets outriggers, makes the lift and leaves. No lowboy, no haul window, no waiting for a truck to come free.
That makes it the efficient answer for a large share of the crane work in a built-up city: rooftop mechanical units, sign and canopy sets, equipment swaps in a parking lot, structural members on a finished site, and anything where you would otherwise pay more to move a crane than to use it.
The limits are honest ones. It wants paved or well compacted access, and at longer radius the chart tightens quickly. If your load sits well out from the crane, the 60-ton truck crane or a rough terrain is the better call and we will say so.

Operated crane work bills against an hourly minimum, portal to portal. The clock runs from our yard and back rather than only while the crane sits on your pad, which is standard for operated service and is the number people forget to compare when they shop a rate.
A rigger or signal person is added per man when the pick calls for one. There is no fuel surcharge and no counterweight fee. Larger jobs are quoted as clean separate lines so mobilization, setup and crane time are each visible instead of rolled into one figure you cannot check.
On short jobs the hourly minimum matters more than the hourly figure, which is why we would rather talk about your actual pick than send you a rate sheet.
Quoted per job. On smaller picks the cost drivers are different from a big lift, and it helps to know which ones you can influence.

A short pick still buys a minimum, so batching several sets into one visit is the cheapest way to run this class.
